For applications where strength and dependability are important, stainless steel is one of the most popular industrial alloys for many CNC machining projects because of its desirable physical properties!
Chances are you’ve seen stainless steel every day of your life in your very own household with cutlery, electronics, cookware, screws, outdoor applications, etc. However, it is also an excellent option for industrial and business applications, such as surgical instruments, internal automotive parts, aerospace machinery, and more. These types of alloys can be fashioned into almost anything, including wire, coils, tubing, plates, bars, and sheets— all using CNC machining!
Though, machining stainless steel requires an incredible amount of experience and skill to produce reliable results every time. While it is one of the most demanding materials to work with, the benefits you reap from stainless steel far outweigh the challenges. These benefits are outlined below! Variety of Grades to Choose From
There are more than 100 grades of stainless steel, each with slightly different alloy compositions. For a steel to be considered “stainless,” there must be a minimum 10.5% chromium; however, the amount of chromium will differ from one to the next, and additional ingredients may be added as well.
The two most common grades are 316 and 304, the difference between them being that 316-grade steel has molybdenum, while 304 steel does not. This means that 316 steel has much more corrosion resistance against chloride solutions commonly found in chemical solvents and heavy-duty industrial processing environments. Molybdenum also better protects against salty environments like those at sea or along the coast, making it ideal for the oil and energy industry.
Excellent Resistance
Stainless steel has excellent resistance to pitting, cracking and, most notably, corrosion. We know that many of the parts we produce are put to use in harsh environments where corrosion presents a risk to the rest of the equipment’s safety and functionality. Overall, stainless steel provides great performance in heavy-duty climates as well as at high and low temperatures. Stainless steel guarantees of durability that many of our industrial clients require.
High, Tensile Strength
Cold hardened stainless steel has superior strength compared to other metals. This means that the parts using stainless steel can be machined from thinner materials, reducing cost and weight. We can also use a heat-curing process to strengthen it further.
Low Maintenance & Durable
Once you have a stainless steel part created and in use, it is very low maintenance for the entirety of its life. The combination of low maintenance, hygienic, and excellent cleanability make it suitable for many different types of applications. It also often results in a longer life cycle of steel parts compared to other metals.
